Our focus is in line with the EU’s climate ambition to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and to become climate neutral by 2050. Increasing demand for animal-sourced foods stimulates the intensification and industrialization of animal production, which increase the release of greenhouse gases, land use, and water consumption. Hence, the alternative protein industry provides better food security without significantly impacting climate change.
By advancing the industry for alternative proteins, we can also reduce the risk of zoonotic disease transmission and pandemics. Moreover, they do not require antibiotics for their production and therefore will not contribute to the proliferation of antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Creating new production technologies and developing alternative sources of protein are critically important for public health and creating sustainable, healthy diets for everyone.
